Honoring your guests needn't be lengthy nor stressful. Break down the toast into both mathematical and sentimental components and hit a home run every time.
Building a CO2 rig at home is easier than you think. And to top it off, you'll save money every year with this contraption. No more running to the store to lug home bottles of seltzer and soda, now you can make it at home!
Get in touch with your rural self and shake some butter in a jar tonight. The traditions that kept our prairie-selves alive are ripe for the picking, no need for fancy equipment here just a jar and some cream!
High flying acrobatics ensue when we heat the tiny water droplet trapped inside corn bran. Learn the reason behind the sound in this quick lesson on popcorn!
Let me save you from the terrifying moments when you realize, mid-cake, that you're missing an ingredient. A little chemistry goes a long way when it comes to kitchen hacks!
Packing citrus fruit with salt is a technique used the world over, but when we talk about preserved lemon we mentally fly to Morocco. This is a terrific way to make use of your leftover winter crop, concentrating the flavor of lemons into a salty, tender, treat.
Sugar presents us with some of the more accessible chemistry in the kitchen, and peanut brittle is an excellent example. Toss some baking soda into the bubbling caramel and let the carbon dioxide do the heavy lifting.
The glory of chemistry is revealed in full splendor when we subject whole heads of garlic to low heat for a very long time. Watch the flavor and antioxidant compounds unfold from raw garlic as it changes color and transforms into a new beast altogether!
Corned beef is, by far, my favorite deli meat (don't you have a favorite?). In honor of St. Patrick's Day I present the history and science behind this perfect, pink meat. It's time to start a new chapter and hatch those plans you've been laying all Winter! While the ancient tradition of egg balancing has been disproven (you can, in fact, balance eggs on any day of the year), I still love the symbolism of acknowledging balance as a new season begins. Get cracking!
Take a look into the chemistry behind cheese making with me! While most cheeses take time to age, every culture has a "quick" cheese: something that you can make at home with ingredients you've already got in your fridge. Get busy with the Home & Family team today.
This is the sort of recipe you keep up your sleeve for those busiest weeks in the year. Make a tray of these bars and stick them in the fridge, when you get up in the morning breakfast accomplished!
Dinnergeddon is a truly magnificent event and Andrew Hyde is a dinner party hero. This is the seventh incarnation, by far our largest gathering. Thank you to the guests who make this a true joy. As usual the menu was entirely Paleo friendly: tamarind-citrus chicken, mashed plantains, and cilantro-jicama slaw. This will be my last dinnergeddon in Boulder for a while and I'll miss it. Love all around.
Red and dripping with juice, a plateful of strawberry shortcake is the quickest way to a smile-filled afternoon. Make quick drop biscuits in place of the shortcake and your dessert will be ready even faster.
Don't want to cook dinner in the oven tonight? Grab a wok and work the stovetop, it's quick, easy, and will keep the heat down in your kitchen this summer.
Though we may be losing the weather for picnics, this salad will get you through the Fall inside or outside. It's quick to make at home in a large batch, then keep in your fridge to take to work for lunch. Swap out the asparagus for another veggie when the seasons change.
